Would You Make a Good Denture Patient?
If you’ve lost 50% or more of your natural teeth, or if most of your remaining teeth are in poor health, you may make a great denture candidate. Most people qualify for dentures, but which type is best for you?
We offer:
- Full, traditional dentures replace all teeth on the upper and/or lower arch. They suction to the upper palate and are held in place by denture adhesive on the lower palate. Traditional dentures need to be relined when their fit becomes loose.
- Partials, or partial dentures, replace a few lost teeth across the upper and/or lower arch. Partials rely on hidden clips attached to healthy teeth for support.
- Implant-retained dentures can be full or partial, for either or both arches. Traditional lower dentures can slip and wobble without implant support.
- Removable or fixed dentures: Traditional partial and full dentures are usually removable but can be permanently attached. Implant dentures can also be removable or fixed. Most patients should opt for removable dentures because they’re easier to care for than fixed appliances. However, patients with cognitive impairment may need fixed dentures so that they aren’t lost or misplaced.
What to Expect at Your Denture Appointments
We will take digital, panoramic, and/or cone-beam x-rays so that Dr. Momi has a full picture of your mouth, above and below the surface. If you need full dentures, we will need to extract any remaining teeth. Once your bone and gums heal and we take impressions, the new dentures can be created.
Dr. Momi will send your x-rays and appropriate records to our local dental lab. There, skilled technicians will fabricate your dentures according to Dr. Momi’s specifications for shape, color, and size.
If you want implant-retained dentures, you’ll undergo a brief, outpatient surgery for placement of the implant posts.
When the permanent denture arrives, you’ll return to our Arlington, WA, dental clinic. Dr. Momi will show you how to secure the dentures, and he’ll make sure they fit properly. Minor adjustments can be done in our office.
How to Extend the Life of Your Dentures
Take great care of your dentures, and they’ll last five to seven years, maybe longer, before needing relining or replacement. Follow the instructions provided for cleaning your dentures. You will need a denture brush, a special denture cleaning solution, and for traditional lower dentures, be sure to keep denture adhesive on hand.
HERE’S A TIP: Place a towel on the sink before handling your dentures. Then, if you accidentally drop them, they’re less likely to chip or break on the soft surface. If your dentures are damaged or feel loose, call Arlington Dental Clinic for assistance.
